Description

G. Gunnery and Son is a shop and warehouse built in the early 19th century, featuring a shopfront from the mid to late 19th century. The building is constructed of Flemish bond orange brick with yellow headers and has a Welsh slate roof with two brick chimneys. It is two stories tall and has a three-bay front. The wide shopfront includes plate glass windows on either side of a recessed glazed entrance in the center. This shopfront is framed and divided by pilasters and columns that have simple strapwork details. The long lintel above the entrance features a line of guttae and displays the shop name "G Gunnery and Co." in late 19th-century lettering. The upper story has three 12-pane sash windows with flat wedged stone heads and stone sills.

At the rear, there is a three-story warehouse that includes loading bays and windows with glazing bars, as well as two hoists beneath projecting gabled caps. Inside, the shop and warehouse retain a complete mid to late 19th-century interior, characteristic of a grocer and Italian warehouseman. The shop features long pine and marble-topped counters, banks of shelving supported by twisted balusters, and glazed cupboards with some tracery. Behind the shop is the general office, which contains a fitted sloped desk and other furniture. The warehouse has wooden beams supported by iron columns, narrow wooden staircases, and a wooden and iron winch wheel. One room in the warehouse includes chutes for packing goods. The shop and warehouse is listed for its very complete interior.
