Description
No. 9 Stanley Place is a town house dating from 1780, now connected with No. 11 Stanley Place and used as a language school. The building is constructed of brown brick in Flemish bond with a grey slate roof. It stands three storeys tall and features a painted stone plinth. Access is via two stone steps leading to a door with four fielded panels above two flush panels, set within a pedimented doorcase that has a plain replaced overlight.
The first storey has two recessed sash windows, while the second storey has three, and the third storey features three shorter sashes, all of which are two-pane replacements. The first and third storeys have painted stone sills, and there is a sill band at the second storey. The window heads are slightly cambered and made of painted gauged brick. A parapet cornice crowns the building, and there is a rainwater head and pipe, with the lower part removed, featuring a bracket dated 1780. The building has two chimneys on the west side and a long rear wing that lacks visible features of interest.
Inside, the hall includes a modillion cornice and a half-glazed Edwardian inner door with sidelights and an overlight. It features a basket arch with pilasters, and there are doors with five fielded panels leading to the front room and an altered rear room in the main block and rear wing. The front room has panelled embrasures with shutters and a cornice. The open-well staircase has a curtail step, an open string with shaped brackets, plinthed stick balusters, tapered newels, and a swept handrail, along with a round-arched window on the second half-landing. The front room on the second storey contains a five-panel door, large panels beneath the dado rail, and a fluted frieze to the cornice. The lobby to the rear wing features a basket arch with pilasters and three steps leading to a six-panel door with a fanlight. The third storey front room has a two-panel door and panelled embrasures, along with additional doors of five fielded panels and four-panel doors.
