Description

Holme Street Hall is a large farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with extensions added to the rear in the late 18th century and some alterations made in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of red brick in an irregular bond, featuring buff sandstone dressings and a Welsh slate roof, topped with two massive lateral brick chimneys. The front of the house is symmetrical with three bays and three stories. It has a stone plinth, flush stone quoins, and a moulded band at the first floor that rises to form hood moulds over the windows. The end bays feature deepened three-light stone mullioned windows with plain sashes below, while the first floor has rebated chamfered five-light stone mullioned windows with flat hoods, and the top storey has a rebated chamfered three-light mullioned window.

At the center, there is a projecting gabled two-storey porch with coping, kneelers, and mace finials. The late 19th-century doorcase has a chamfered lintel and a half-glazed door, with a two-light window above and a stone surround for a plaque featuring a boldly carved lion rampant. There is also a graffito on a kneeler with a lozenge shape, a worn date (possibly 1624), and the initials HC.

Inside, the original layout consisted of only two large rooms on each floor. The modern hall features a pine dogleg stair. The room to the right has a dado with fielded panels, while the room to the left has massive unmoulded ceiling beams, which are also present upstairs. There are modern fireplaces throughout, along with several early three-board doors that are now papered over.
