Description
Christ Church was built between 1869 and 1871 as the parish church for Ellesmere Port, located near the site of an earlier Chapel of Ease from the Eastham Parish, which has since been demolished. The church features a cruciform design, created on a limited budget, and is well composed with intersecting roofs over the nave, chancel, short transepts, and vestry. It has a small diminishing pyramidal spire with a louvred belfry and square rock-faced sandstone rubble walls. The east window consists of three lights with geometric tracery, while the spacious aisleless nave has three-light windows and the transepts have two-light windows, both featuring plate tracery.
Inside, the church remains largely unaltered. The nave roof is supported by collar-braced softwood trusses with cusped arches, while the chancel has more massive trusses. There are flat pointed arches between the nave and the one-bay transepts. Notable interior features include a stone pulpit with cusped arches and marble columns, as well as a circular stone font.
