Description
The monument to the Woodhouse family, located 15 meters northeast of the Church of St. John, dates back to 1840. It is constructed of ashlar limestone set on a red sandstone base, featuring marble plaques. The large monument stands approximately 3 meters high and has a moulded plinth that supports a plain rectangular body with sunken marble plaques on each face, although one plaque is missing. The inscriptions commemorate members of the Woodhouse family, including William, who died while visiting his estates in Marsala, Sicily. The body of the monument is topped with a moulded cornice that supports a flat capstone adorned with ornate consoles on the long sides. This capstone holds a sarcophagus with claw feet and plain flaring sides. The lid of the sarcophagus is weathered and stepped, featuring raised palmettes at the corners. Samuel Woodhouse of Norley Hall donated the land for the original church.
