Description

The Church of St John Evangelist was built between 1878 and 1879 by architect J.L. Pearson. It is constructed from tooled ashlar red sandstone and features a red tile roof. The church is designed in a later 13th-century style and includes a four-bay nave with a north aisle, a two-bay chancel, a vestry, a central tower, and north transepts.

On the south side, there is a gabled buttressed porch at the left end, which is accessed by 11 steps. The entrance features a two-centred double-chamfered arch supported by colonnettes. The nave windows are designed with two lights and quatrefoil plate tracery. The broad and sturdy tower separates the nave from the chancel and has a taller window in its lowest stage, a clock in the middle stage, and pairs of moulded two-light louvred bell openings in the top stage, all topped with a line of corbelling. The plain parapet above is adorned with a delicate band of ball ornament and triangular coping. The chancel contains lancet windows, and the east end features a trio of tall windows with Y-tracery and a pair of blocked quatrefoils above.

Inside, there is a four-bay arcade leading to the north aisle, with columns that become more ornate as they approach the sanctuary, transitioning from round to multi-shafted. The aisle and nave windows have splayed reveals, and the nave has a wagon roof. The crossing arches are supported by clusters of colonnettes. The chancel includes simple sedilia and an oak reredos, and there is a Willis organ located in the transept. The square font, featuring quatrefoils, likely originates from the earlier church built in 1835.
