Description

Dod's Marsh is a former farmhouse that has been converted into a house. It dates back to the 16th century, with later alterations and additions from the 17th century, an 18th-century addition to the north-east, and some changes made in the 20th century. The building features washed coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and one bay in washed brick, topped with a Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge, and three stone chimneys. The structure has a T-shaped plan from the 17th century and consists of one and two storeys with a six-bay south-east front.

The left end bay is an added cross-wing with heavy stone quoins, a three-light wooden casement window below, and a four-light chamfered stone-mullioned window above, which is set under a rubble hood mould. The central three bays are one storey high, featuring a blocked door to the left, a tall three-light stone-mullioned window to the right, and a 20th-century rebuilt staircase turret in the centre. The right end, which consists of two bays in brick, has cambered brick heads above a door and casements. The south-west gable showcases three-light mullioned windows with rubble hood moulds, and at the rear, there is a single round-headed light.

Inside, the building originally had a cross-passage with a hall to the right, supported by two full cruck trusses on padstones (one of which is now just the upper part), with tie beams and collars that have been sawn away. An inserted floor, partly supported by timber posts, features chamfered ceiling beams and an entrance marked by a heck post and screen with a chamfered fire beam. To the left of the passage, there are three rooms, each accessed by descending three stone steps, with timber-framed partition walls. The parlour includes a weakly ovolo-moulded ceiling beam and a chamfered corner stone fireplace.
