Description

Spittle House, specifically the west range, is a remarkable survival, dating perhaps to the 14th century with repairs in the 17th and 20th centuries. Originally part of a monastic leprosy hospital managed by St. Werburgh's Abbey, Chester, who held the parish of Prestbury, it now forms part of a larger house. The building is timber framed and stands on a sandstone plinth, with a Kerridge stone-slate roof and stone ridge. The rectangular plan consists of two bays.

The east front has ten tall, rectangular panels with angle bracing of the wall plate. There is a glazed door in an earlier opening, alongside an inserted 20th-century window. Extensions are visible to the left, built of rubble stone, and to the right, constructed of 20th-century brick.

Inside, there are three pairs of matched elbow crucks featuring a tie beam, two tall queen posts, a collar (later insertions), and a small triangular yoke. The roof is wind braced through purlins and ridge. The southern bay appears to have been open to the roof, and the ridge shows evidence of burning. The northern bay was originally of two storeys, evidenced by slots for tie beam joints and a rebated doorcase between the queen posts. The jambs of the crucks are chamfered. The building’s simple plan and construction make it a significant example of a timber-framed monastic structure.
