Description
Brook House Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 16th century, with an early 17th-century addition and further alterations from the late 17th century. The building features a mix of partly coursed squared buff sandstone rubble and partly rendered brick, topped with a Kerridge stone-slate roof and two plastered stacks. It has an L-shaped plan, with the east range containing the earliest features. The north gable includes a 6-light chamfered stone-mullion window with a hood mould below, a rebated 5-light window above, and a simpler 2-light window to the left. The remaining openings on the east front are all from the 20th century, some placed where two lateral stacks were removed.
Inside, the original house is timber framed, with 1½ pairs of full crucks resting on padstones still intact. The added stone parlour features weakly ovolo-moulded jetty posts, ceiling beams, and wooden lintels above the rear windows. A 3-light stone-mullion window remains within the house, with one light still having its original lattice leaded glazing. The roof truss over the parlour includes a tiebeam and two diagonal struts. A clay-floored priest hole, which can only be accessed from the loft, has now been incorporated into the bathroom. The north range, which has a Welsh slate roof, is not included in the listing.
