Description
Penny Loaves is a former farmhouse, bakery, and alehouse, now a house, dating from the early 17th century with 20th-century alterations and additions. The building is constructed of rendered stone rubble and features a Kerridge stone-slate roof with a stone ridge and one plastered chimney. Originally, it had a U-shaped plan or consisted of two parallel ranges that were later joined.
The structure is two stories high with a three-bay, twin-gabled front. The gables have 20th-century casements on both stories and display heavy roof timbers. A small central gabled porch features a semi-circular headed entrance.
Inside, there are timber-framed partition walls. The parlour includes a deeply chamfered ceiling beam with a flat and tongue stop, a bead-moulded wooden lintel above the window, and a fire beam. Other rooms have simpler ceiling beams.
