Description
Nos 2 to 40 on The Hill are a group of almshouses built between 1865 and 1867, designed by the architect Sir George Gilbert Scott. The buildings consist of four blocks, each containing five dwellings. They are constructed from red and blue diapered brick and stand two storeys high, featuring three projecting gables on each block, along with gable dormers. The stone dressings add to their architectural detail. Each ground storey has verandahs situated between the gables, supported by wooden posts and topped with tiled roofs. The windows are casement style, fitted with lozenge pattern leaded lights, and the doorways are framed in gothic-headed stone surrounds, leading to ledged doors.
