Description

The Brunner Mond Sandbach Works War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921 and relocated in 1934. It was designed by Darcy Braddell for Brunner Mond.

The memorial features a red sandstone pylon and a white limestone panel, adorned with bronze fixtures. It has a rectangular shape with indents at each corner and stands in a small planting area on a circular green at the center of the cemetery, marking the end of the entrance road.

The original memorial includes a limestone panel on the east front, designed in Renaissance style with a projecting cornice and sill, a central semi-circular pediment, and pilasters on either side that have egg-and-dart abacuses. These are supported by bold curlicues. A central plaque between the pilasters, which has eared lower corners and shouldered upper corners with pendant garlands, is inscribed with black-filled incised letters that read:

TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF/ THE MEN FROM THESE WORKS/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 TO 1919/

Beneath this plaque are the names of ten fallen individuals, listed alphabetically by surname along with their unit, but without ranks. Below the plaque is a bronze pair of crossed palm leaves. The pediment features carved rays of heavenly light in bold relief, with a bronze laurel wreath and additional palm leaves in front. Flaming bronze torches are positioned on either side of the pediment.

The pylon, constructed in 1934, is approximately 12 feet high, 7 feet wide, and 2 feet thick, made of coursed ashlar blocks. It has slightly battered sides, a stepped top, a pyramidal cap, and vertical pilasters on each side return, resting on a two-stepped base of the same design. A bronze tablet is attached to the front of the bottom step, inscribed in relief with the following text:

THIS MEMORIAL WAS ORIGINALLY/ ERECTED AT THE SANDBACH WORKS OF/ BRUNNER MOND & CO. LIMITED/ AND WAS REMOVED TO THIS SITE/ IN 1934 OWING TO THE CLOSING DOWN/ OF THOSE WORKS.
