Description
The Old Hall Hotel is a historic building dated 1656, although the two-gabled projecting wing on the left side is slightly later. This large timber-framed structure, known for its "black and white" appearance, occupies the site of the ancient mansion of the Sondbaches, former lords of the manor. The hotel has three storeys and features four gables with restored barge-boards and finials. The exposed timber framing is prominent throughout, with some shaped timbers displaying decorative motifs such as balusters and barbed lozenges, all well restored. The base is made of brick and stone, and the windows are moulded wood mullion and transom casement types with leaded lights, also well restored. The first-storey windows in the gabled bays have shallow pediments. There is a carriage arch on the right-hand side of the building, along with restored brick stacks featuring diagonal shafts. The doorways have restored or renewed batten doors, and the roof is made of stone flags. The rear elevation combines timber framing and brickwork. Inside the left wing, there are three notable Jacobean fireplaces (possibly not in their original locations), good oak panelling in the ground storey room to the right of the entrance, additional panelling in the Dining Room (not in situ), and an original oak splat baluster staircase. The hotel is set back from the road in its own grounds.
