Description
The sundial, located 10 meters in front of Shell Cottage at Adlington Hall, is likely from the early 18th century and was created for John Legh. It was moved to its current position in the mid-18th century. The sundial is made of buff sandstone and features a square base with a crude, low domed top that supports a barrel-shaped pillar with a bead moulding at the top. Atop the pillar is an octagonal copper plate, which is becoming worn, and a pierced triangular gnomon. The plate displays Roman numerals, notes the longitude of Adlington, and includes John Legh's initials. It is believed that the pillar may have originally served as a Saxon cross base, with another similar pillar relocated to the Mount in Prestbury.
