Description
Roving Bridge is a towing path bridge located at the junction of the Middlewich Branch of the Shropshire Union Canal with the Chester to Nantwich length. It was built around 1830 and is attributed to Thomas Telford. The bridge is constructed of red and blue bricks with stone dressing and features a very humped, elliptical arch. The north parapet has square end piers topped with rectangular, four-way weathered stone copings, while the south parapet curves through 90 degrees to meet the ground parallel to the canal. The parapet copings have a segmental section between the end finishings. At road level, there is a projecting weathered stone carriage band. Additionally, a segmental relieving arch is present in the abutment of the bridge on the canal side, opposite the tow path.
