Description
The Castle Public House is a public house located on Church Street in Macclesfield. It likely began as late 18th century dwellings that were later remodeled into a public house in the 19th century, with a large extension added to the rear during that time. The building is constructed of brick, painted at the front, and features Welsh slate roofs with end stacks.
The layout consists of a triple room depth and double width, with a central entrance leading to public rooms on the left and right, and a servery situated between two bars on the right. The exterior is two storeys high, with the central entrance opening into a corridor that leads to a smoke room on the left and two bars with a bar counter on the right.
Inside, there is a small internal porch that leads to a small bar on the right, which includes a 19th century bar counter, fixed seating, and panelling. The smoke room on the left features fixed seating, bell pushes, a painted slate fire surround, and a ceiling adorned with large plaster lozenge patterns and foliage ornament. Behind the servery is a parlour with a glazed partition to the corridor and a late 20th century opening to the servery, along with a serving hatch in the corridor.
The Castle Public House is a rare example of a small, largely unaltered 19th century public house that retains its original layout and many of its fittings.
