Description
The Cheshire Cat Public House, built in the late 17th century, was originally an almshouse for aged widows, known as Wilbraham's Almshouses. The building features a timber frame with brick infilling, painted in black and white, and stands two stories tall with a gabled end facing Second Wood Street. It has three original wood mullioned windows with four lights on the front, with the upper sections transomed, and a five-light window at the gabled end. All windows have modern or restored leaded lights. There are three moulded wood doorways with later doors and modern barge boards, with tiled roofing. The building now includes 19th-century cottages at the rear and has been recently restored and converted from a restaurant to a public house, while preserving its character. The interior retains exposed timber framing throughout. The Cheshire Cat Public House is part of a group that includes the Three Pigeons Public House and several other properties on the street.
