Description
Townwell House is an important large three-storey house built in the early to mid-18th century. It is constructed of red brick and features a roof made of old tiles with gabled ends. The house has a moulded wood eaves cornice with modillions, stone dressings, long and short quoins, a moulded string course, and rusticated window heads with keyblocks and stone sills. There are five sash windows with plain reveals. The central entrance is notable, featuring an eight-fielded panel door set in a moulded stone surround, topped with a pediment on consoles, an entablature, and a triple keyblock above the door.
At the rear, the garden elevation includes a two-storey segment and projection with a three-light first-floor window in a stone surround, arched at the center. The property also includes a contemporary two-storey symmetrical coach house and a well-maintained walled garden. Inside, there is a fine broad staircase, dado panelling, and one fully panelled room.
Townwell House is part of a group with Nos 42 to 64 (even), 64A, 64B, and Nos 66 to 92 (even).
