Description

The gatepiers at Withington Hall date from the mid-18th century and are constructed from ashlar stone. There are four gatepiers in total, with two larger central piers flanked by two smaller piers on either side, measuring approximately 10 feet by 8 feet respectively. The square bases of the piers transition through broaching chamfers to cross-shaped rusticated piers. At the top, these piers taper back with a similar reversed chamfer to heavy square capitals that feature modillion cornices. These capitals support concave-sided finials topped with large balls.
