Description
Smiths Green Farmhouse is a farmhouse dated 1658, as indicated by the initials "I.S." on the bressumer between the ground and first floors. The building features a timber frame with wattle and daub and brick infill, and it has a plain tile roof, which was originally thatched. The farmhouse is two storeys high.
On the entrance front, there is a stone base and a gabled wing to the left, which has seven ground floor cells with cement rendered infill and a five-light 19th-century casement window. The first floor has a slight overhang with an ovolo-moulded underside to the inscribed bressumer. The small framing on the first floor consists of eight cells with angle braces and brick infill, and there is a queen-post truss in the gable with upright struts on either side. To the right, there is a 19th-century two-bay addition.
The original entrance front features a gabled porch wing to the left of centre, which has three ground floor cells of small framing and a two-light casement window. The corner posts have consoles that support the overhanging first floor, which contains coved cells with wattle and daub infill. The first floor also has small framing and a two-light casement window. The gable features consoles and an ovolo moulding on the bressumer with run-out stops.
Both sides of the porch wing have small framing, with a blocked doorway on the right side. The uppermost row of cells on both sides retains wattle and daub infill. To the right of the porch wing, there are six ground floor cells of small framing and seven cells on the first floor, which also has angle braces and an ovolo moulding on the bressumer. There are three-light casement windows on both floors. To the left of the porch wing, there are three ground floor cells of small framing and four cells on the first floor, with a later clasping buttress at the left corner. The uppermost row of cells on both sides again retains wattle and daub infill.
