Description

This is a 17th-century timber-framed building that was refronted in the 19th century with a plain cement and roughcast finish. It is two storeys high with an attic, and has a modern appearance due to the 3-light casement windows with wood transomes. A canted oriel window is on the right-hand side. Gables are present on either side; the left gable has modern bargeboards, while the right gable features ornamental bargeboards and a finial. The roof is slate-covered, and there’s a large stone chimney at the rear of number 16, featuring a restored brick stack. 19th-century shop fronts are present. A passageway between numbers 18 and 20 reveals exposed timber framing along the side of a rear wing, which has a projecting upper storey. The interior of number 18 retains good moulded ceiling beams on the ground floor. The building is said to have once been an inn.
