Description
The Dower House is a former farm cottage that was later used as an estate office and is now a house. It dates from the late 18th century and was extended and altered in 1888 for Henry Boddington, with some 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of roughcast brick on a stone plinth, topped with a Kerridge stone-slate roof, stone ridge, and three brick chimneys.
It has a two-storey, five-bay front. The left end bay features three-light iron casements with small-pane leaded glazing and added label moulds, which are also present over the windows in the second and fourth bays. The third bay includes a projecting two-storey gabled porch made of timber framing on a stone plinth, supported by a series of short columns adorned with strapwork that carry mythical beasts flanking a three-centred headed doorcase. The spandrels of the porch record the date of the alterations, and a tiebeam features a couplet favored by Henry Boddington: "When Gorse is out at blossom, kissings out of fashion." A sitting troubadour is depicted on a downpipe. There is a range of outbuildings added to the rear of the house.
Inside, there are some six-panelled doors, but no other notable features of interest. The Dower House was extended to serve as the estate office for Pownall Hall on Carrwood Road.
