Description

This pair of gatepiers, located in the churchyard of St James, dates from the early to mid-18th century and is constructed from ashlar stone. Each pier is square and stands on a cruciform projecting plinth. The inner faces of the piers feature projecting rebates topped with scroll designs. Both the front and rear of each pier have shell niches that display skulls and cross-bones in relief. The piers are capped with moulded cyma caps that support square plinths, each adorned with two stacked balls.
