Description
The Harrington Arms Public House is a late 17th century to early 18th century building that has undergone alterations and additions in the 19th century. It is constructed of red English garden wall-bond brick with a stone slate roof, featuring end and ridge stacks. The layout consists of a large square block from the late 17th or early 18th century on the right, with a long cross wing added later on the left, and further additions in the angle between. The public house area includes bars that lead off from a central corridor, located in both the earlier and later sections.
The exterior of the earlier part is three stories high with a rendered brick plinth. It has two bays, each with two cambered-headed casement windows on every floor. A string course, made up of a projecting row of stretchers, runs between the storeys and is also set in each gable, with cogged bricks below. There are various blocked windows in the side and rear walls. The 19th-century wing is two stories high with two bays and contains a doorway next to the earlier section.
Inside, the bar servery is positioned to the right of the entrance in a narrow room that leads to two additional public areas further right. The bar counter features simple tongue-and-groove boarding. On the left of the entrance is a tap room with fixed seating. The corridor and tap room have red and black quarry tiling. The staircase in the 17th or 18th-century area is original and has pierced splat balusters. The bar counter and back were refitted in the late 20th century. This public house is a rare example of an unspoilt 19th-century rural public house.
