Description
Maggoty Johnson’s Grave consists of two table tombs situated off Maggoty Lane, within Maggoty Johnson’s Wood. The first tomb, dated 1773, comprises a stone slab set upon a 20th-century brick plinth. It is a rectangular stone raised on a brick base and features an inscription dedicated to Samuel Johnson, who adopted the pseudonym Lord Flame. The inscription details his eccentric genius and desire for a burial in this secluded location, noting his skills as a wit, musician, poet, player, and dancing master, and expressing a preference for a quiet burial avoiding disputes. A second, 19th-century commemorative and admonitory slab stands adjacent. This ashlar stone, with brick foundations, is slightly raised above ground level and bears an inscription. The inscription serves as a warning to passersby to consider their mortality and choose between the paths of faith and damnation, referencing the Judgement Day.
