Description

The Royals is a farmhouse dating to the 17th century. It is timber-framed with rendered infill and a slate roof, and has a T-shaped plan. The front elevation has a brick plinth and 18 x 3 cells of small timber framing with angle braces to the right, left, and left of centre. A further row of twelve cells was added above these, at which point the roof pitch was made shallower. The ground floor has three 19th-century casement windows, and a 19th-century door of six raised and fielded panels, to the left of centre. A 19th-century gabled porchway stands in front of the door. The first floor has three 3-light casement windows projecting into the row of later cells. The right-hand portion of the front has raised mastic in imitation of several perished timbers. The rear has a projecting two-storeyed gabled wing to the centre, with 4 x 3 cells of small framing to each side, rising to the height of the original roof level of the whole house. The wing’s roof, however, is of a shallower pitch. Inside, the ground floor parlour features chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops, one replaced unmoulded beam, and stepped stops to the rafters. There’s an inglenook fireplace with an ogee arched chamfer to the bressumer, also with ogee end stops. Two other ground floor rooms have chamfered ceiling beams and exposed rafters. A chamfered ceiling beam in the rear wing appears to be a reused element.
