Description
The railings, piers, and gates at the Church of St Michael in Burleydam date from the early 18th century and are made of cast iron. The structure features double gates with a pier on either side. The pales of the gates and railings end in arrowheads and include similar dog bars on their lower sections. The gates are equipped with a slam plate and have an ogee-shaped overthrow that connects the two square-plan piers. These piers have cyma-moulded bases and capitals, along with infill of interlacing tracery. Notably, the railings, piers, and gates were relocated from Llewenny and were mentioned by Dr Johnson during his visit to Combermere Abbey in 1774.
