Description
Old Smithy Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with a late 17th-century addition. It features cruck construction with brick infill and a thatched roof. The building has a single cell plan with an additional one-cell section that is 1½ storeys high. The road-facing side has whitewashed rendered walls and includes one 3-light casement window, which is a 19th-century replacement, complete with shutters. The timber framing is rendered, with only the wall-plate visible. There is a gable chimney stack with two flues on the left side and a corner chimney at the front right. The rear elevation is similar but has a stone plinth that is not obscured by pavement. A later one-storey utility wing, likely from the 19th century, is attached to the building, with the roof sweeping down almost to the ground on the right side of the utility block. There is another shuttered 3-light window, also a replacement, to the left. The side elevation facing the main road shows timber framing with cruck and collar-beam construction beneath the rendering and whitewash. Inside, there are two full crucks at the western end, along with purlins, a ridge, and close rafters. A similar arrangement is found at the eastern end, but the truss is embedded in the end wall.
