Description

The stable with an attached ticket office at Wheelock Wharf dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century. It is constructed of red brick and features a plain tile roof, standing two storeys tall and facing the wharf. The central entrance has a segmental arched lintel, leading to a door opening for the first-floor hayloft directly above, flanked by one window on either side. The doors and shutters are made of wooden planks, and there is a dentillated eaves band. The horse stalls inside are reputedly intact.

The office section was added to the right side in the early to mid-19th century. This part is a single storey, also made of red brick with a plain tile roof. It has a central entrance with a semicircular arched brick surround and a six-panel door, along with a segmental-headed window to the right and a large late 20th-century inserted entrance to the left. A ridge chimney stack is present, and the windows are boarded up.

This building is part of a group of early canal structures built around Wheelock Wharf, which was developed as part of the Trent and Mersey Canal, constructed between 1766 and 1777 by James Brindley and Hugh Henshall. The building is included for its group value.
