Description
The gate pier in front of Whirley Hall dates from the late 17th century and is constructed from buff sandstone ashlar. It features a moulded plinth that supports a square body, which has two recessed panels on each face bordered by cabling, with a raised band between them. The upper panel on the front displays the arms of the Fitton family. At the top, there is a projecting, moulded capstone topped with a mushroom finial that has a gadrooned cap. In Victorian times, there was originally a pair of these gate piers, with the missing one displaying the arms of the Swettenham family.
