Description
The icehouse, likely built in the early 19th century, is located in the rear garden of the Coachhouse at Old House Green. It features a red sandstone facing at the entrance, while the rest is constructed from red-brown brick, all set beneath an earth mound that forms the base of a later rock garden. The entrance displays a Gothick arch made from a pair of shaped stones, topped with a naive statue of a woman with her hands clasped over her stomach.
Inside, there is a flag-roofed stone passage measuring 2 meters long, which has a groove for a former door-frame at the inner end. This leads to a 2-meter long brick passage with a pointed vault. The circular ice chamber, approximately 2.2 meters in diameter, features a brick-domed roof with a circular opening at the top, which is closed with flags and covered with earth. Additionally, the icehouse functions as a grotto that overlooks a dumb-bell shaped pool.
