Description

A terrace of twelve houses with attached steps and railings, built in the second quarter of the 19th century. The houses are constructed of garden wall bond brick in a pattern of five bricks wide and one brick deep, with painted ashlar dressings. They have a Welsh slate roof and brick chimneys. Stone steps, rendered dwarf walls, and cast-iron railings form part of the composition.

Each house has two storeys and a basement, with three windows fronting the street. The basements have roll-moulded coping. There are five stone steps leading to each door, numbered consecutively from left to right. Numbers 28 and 29 are wider houses and have central doorways; numbers 30, 31, and 32 have doors to the right; numbers 33 and 34 have doors to the left; and the remaining houses have doors to the right. The doorway to number 29 has been blocked. A renewed, early 20th-century pedimented doorcase is present at number 34, and a new door is at number 33. The windows are sash windows; those at number 28 retain their original glazing bars, while numbers 29 and 31 have replacement glazing bars. The windows have wedge stone lintels and projecting stone sills, except for the first-floor sill band. A contemporary plate glass shop window has been inserted across two bays of number 33. Some basement windows retain their original glazing bars. The area in front of number 35 has been filled in. Number 28 has a one-bay return to Athenaeum Street. The cast-iron railings have leafy headed standards and crown finials to the principals, although some steps and railings have been renewed.
