Description
The Fatfield War Memorial is a 5-meter tall structure made of Bolton Wood stone, located on the north side of Bonemill Lane. It features a blind Celtic cross that rises from an octagonal shaft, which is set upon a slightly tapering pedestal. This pedestal is elevated on a square base that has three steps. The original octagonal cross shaft can be found at the rear of the memorial.
The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the pedestal states: "SACRED TO THE MEMORY OF THE BRAVE MEN OF HARRATON PARISH WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." The names of those commemorated are listed on the other sides of the pedestal, with names from the Second World War added to the north face. Additionally, the front face of the top step bears the inscription: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAT THIS, THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS. ST JOHN 15.13."
