Description
The gates, piers, and railings to the former Sunderland Orphanage, now a community centre, were constructed in 1861, as indicated by the inscription on one of the piers that reads "BOYS ORPHANAGE SUNDERLAND 1861." The structure features rendered stone piers and brick walls topped with rendered stone coping. There are four tall square piers, each with plinths, cornices, and stepped pyramidal coping, which create entrances at the north and south ends of the wall to the west of the former orphanage. The wrought-iron gates have plain dogbars beneath a central rail and are adorned with intertwined fish finials. The railings, which are similar in design, are set within a brick wall that has segmental coping and pilasters at intervals, supporting clustered railings that form open piers.
