Description

The Caretaker's Cottage for the Church of Holy Trinity, originally the Donnison school and school-mistress' house, dates back to 1798 and was established under the will of Mrs. Elizabeth Donnison from 1764. It was extended in 1827 at the expense of Mrs. Elizabeth Woodcock, who added a house for the school-mistress. The cottage is constructed of narrow brick in Flemish bond with painted ashlar dressings and features a slate roof.

The attached Flemish bond brick wall with stone coping extends from the left side and connects to the yard wall along the street. The building is one storey high and consists of three bays on the right and four on the left. The right section has a plinth and an impost band above a blank arcade, with a recessed door surround featuring gauged brick arches. Above the four-panelled door, there is a patterned overlight and a raised panel that reads "THE DONNISON SCHOOL" in low-relief letters. The roof is low-pitched and hipped.

The left section has a similar door within a round-headed surround and a gauged brick arch in a projecting entrance bay on a plinth. There is an impost band over the two left bays, which have gauged brick round arches above fixed lights with glazing bars. A low-relief panel above the door reads "BOYS." The left section also features a low-pitched hipped roof with a tall brick chimney-stack.

The stone-coped wall to the left has a blocked opening with a projecting stone sill and steps forward with stepped stone coping, leading to a tall brick pier on the street front. The wall returns along the street front in a later bond for one bay, which contains a blocked opening under a flat stone lintel.
