Description
The Chapels to Harton Cemetery, built between 1888 and 1891, were designed by architect Henry Grieves. They are located to the east of the entrance at the center of the cemetery. The chapels have an H-shaped plan, with the two outer arms forming the chapels and the cross-piece consisting of the porch and vestry of each chapel. At the center, there is a grand arched carriage-way. The structure is constructed of coursed rubble, with ashlar used for dressings and decorative features, topped with slate roofs.
The design reflects a free late Gothic style, with Tudor influences. The most prominent feature is the tall and elegant tower and spire that crowns the central gateway. The tower is square for the first two stages, with an archway on the first stage. The second stage has narrow octagonal turrets at the corners, which rise into the third stage. The third stage is octagonal and features tall traceried openings, while the fourth stage is a narrow octagonal section with a pierced parapet, culminating in a tall spire. This architectural ensemble creates a striking visual within the now mature setting of the cemetery.
