Description

The entrance gates to Harton Cemetery were designed by architect Henry Grieves and built between 1888 and 1891 for the South Shields and Westoe Burial Board. This triple arched, Gothic-style gateway features a tall, grand central carriage entrance, with a low footway on either side. The arches are adorned with suppressed painted arches that support gables. The central gable includes a quatrefoil roundel at its apex, and below it are two shields inscribed with "AD 1889." The piers of the arches are buttressed on their east and west faces, and all the original wrought-iron gates remain in place.
