Description
No. 53 Tynemouth Road is a school headmaster's house, now a private dwelling, built in 1878 by J. Johnstone for the Wallsend School Board. The building is constructed of snecked sandstone with ashlar plinths, quoins, and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring stone gable copings. It has an L-plan layout and consists of two storeys with two bays. The central entrance is a hardboard-covered door with an overlight that has glazing bars, set within a one-storey extruded porch that has a parapet. The left bay projects and features a gabled canted bay window with paired sash windows and a relieving arch above it; there is a blind bay above the porch. The right bay has paired sash windows, with the upper ones breaking the eaves under a gablet. The eaves are adorned with corbel tables, and the gable copings have a roll-moulded apex on moulded kneelers. The building also has a plinth and sloped coping on the ridge chimneys.
