Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church located on Churchill Street in Wallsend, built in 1876 by architects Austin and Johnson. It is constructed from coursed squared sandstone, featuring an ashlar plinth, quoins, and dressings, topped with a Welsh slate roof and stone gable copings. The church is designed in the Early English style and includes a nave with a south porch and a chancel that has a north vestry.

The entrance door, located in a triple-chamfered recess in the porch, is adorned with elaborate hinges and a handle. The nave consists of four bays with lancet windows, arranged in pairs on the north side and alternating pairs on the south side. There are two west lancets beneath a large roundel. The chancel features an arcade and seven lancets, some of which are partly blind, on the south side, along with three stepped east lancets under an almond-shaped window and three roundels. The exterior is enhanced by set-back buttresses and a sill string.

The roof includes a sanctus bellcote and cross finials. Inside, the church has plaster walls with ashlar dressings and a king-post roof. The chancel arch is marked by an inner corbelled arch with irregular jambs and steeply sloping sills for the windows. Long sill panels are present in the chancel, which also contains an aumbry with a cusped canopy and an octagonal stone font. A high-quality rood screen commemorates Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee, while the Gothic-style pulpit serves as a memorial for World War I.
