Description
The Ouseburn Viaduct with accommodation arch is a railway viaduct built between 1837 and 1839 by John and Benjamin Green for the Newcastle and North Shields Railway Company. It was altered and its width doubled in 1869 for the North-Eastern Railway Company. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar with iron arches and superstructure, which were added in 1869 when the original laminated timber arches were removed. It features T-section iron lattices between the arches and railway bed girders, which are also supported by masonry. The viaduct has sloped copings on its buttressed piers and abutments, and an ashlar skew arch spans over Stepney Road. Historically, it is notable for being one of the earliest bridges in Britain constructed using the Wiebeking system of laminated wood, and the current ironwork closely resembles the original timber design.
