Description
This is a pair of mirrored terraces, each consisting of five houses, forming a formal square with end pergolas, constructed between 1976 and 1978. The design was by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as site architect, White, Young and Partners as structural engineers, and Shepherd Construction Limited as the main contractor. The buildings are constructed of pale modular metric brick on a timber frame, with weatherboarding. They have blue metal monopitch roofs with plywood box beam purlins.
The two terraces, numbered 1-9 (odd) Benson Place and 2-10 (even) Benson Place, are also addressed as 4 and 2 Old Vicarage Walks. The end houses are set at right angles and have access via side doors. The houses at numbers 1 Benson Place and 4 Old Vicarage Walks have two-storey brick and weatherboarded projections at the rear, with number 9 exhibiting a brown rear weatherboard. Numbers 2-10 (even) Benson Place, and 2 Old Vicarage Walk feature projecting, single-storey catslide roofs at each end, oriented away from the square. The front of the square displays bright green eaves on the projecting parts and soft blue weatherboarding on the lower parts of numbers 2-10. All windows are timber-framed with aluminium opening lights, largely sliding. Doors are red and blue, some of which have been renewed in hardwood.
Attached fences are located at the rear of the houses, complemented by spur walls at either end. Walls also surround the square. Outside numbers 1 and 2 Benson Place, a brown timber pergola with a pyramidal roof provides shelter. A small timber pergola, forming an arch, incorporates seating at the entrance to the square. Benson Place, with its landscaping, planting, and seating, is an important feature of the Chirton neighbourhood.
Historical information and sources are available under entries for numbers 1-75 Dunn Terrace.
