Description

The accommodation arch and railway viaduct between High Level Bridge, Castle Garth, and Central Station in Newcastle upon Tyne were built around 1890. Designed by engineer Thomas Harrison for the Newcastle, York and Berwick Railway, and later by William Bell for the North-Eastern Railway, this structure features sandstone ashlar and brick. The design is Y-shaped, with an ashlar skew arch over Queen's Lane and brick-lined viaduct arches on either side. The arches are flanked by wide pilasters, and there is a cornice at rail-bed level along with an impost string between the arches. The flat-coped parapet on the north side, which runs parallel to Westgate Road, has been partly removed. Some of the arches have been bricked up and fitted with doors.
