Description

The railway viaduct, built in 1849 for the Newcastle York and Berwick Railway and later modified between 1890 and 1894 for the North-Eastern Railway, is constructed from sandstone ashlar and features six brick arches. The north elevation is rusticated and includes a band at railbed level, a coped parapet, wide pilasters, and voussoirs to the arches. The south elevation, made of plain ashlar, has a vermiculate frieze below the cornice at railbed level.
