Description
Turnbull's Warehouse is a warehouse complex built in 1888, with later additions of 1897 and a tower in 1898. Designed by F. W. Rich for Robinson and Co., printers, it is located on the west side of Queens Lane, Newcastle upon Tyne. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has a Welsh slate roof.
The warehouse is five storeys high on the right and six storeys high on the left, with attic space; it comprises six bays on the right, two bays on the left, and seven bays in total. A near-central, two-bay tower rises above the main structure. The tower features groups of three slit windows on each floor, a panelled and blind-arcaded top floor, and wide windows. The windows in the left section’s top floor are round-headed with brick-and-stone keyed arches. Bays are defined by buttresses, with ashlar bands on the upper floors of the left section. Sill bands run across the facade. Cornices are present on the second floor of the left section. A continuous top cornice, dentilled on the left and on the tower, runs around the building. Shaped attic gables, with central pediments and round-headed and oeil-de boeuf windows between pilasters, are a distinctive feature. A high pyramidal roof tops the tower, with small octagonal spirelets featuring swept eaves over blind oriels. A central lead-covered ogee hipped roof completes the composition.
