Description
St John's Cemetery north entrance gates, piers, walls, and railings were constructed around 1856 by Johnstone and Knowles. The structure is made of sandstone ashlar and cast iron. It features a Tudor arch with a string course and a gabled, crocketed parapet, flanked by tall octagonal piers that have gabled coping and high octagonal gabled pinnacles. The flanking piers for the pedestrian gates also have gabled coping. Both the vehicle and pedestrian gates are designed with gothic tracery and include spearhead standards and dog bars. The quadrant walls have rounded coping topped with spear-headed railings and low, spiked dog bars. Above the entrance, there is a scroll inscribed with "ST. JOHN'S/CEMETERY/ELSWICK."
