Description

This is a group of five short terraces of houses, two individual houses, and a semi-detached pair, numbered 2 to 44, with attached front and rear walls, a pergola, and fences. The houses were built between 1978 and 1979 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as site architect, White, Young and Partners as structural engineers, and Shepherd Construction as the main contractor.

The houses are constructed using pale brick, metric modular brick construction on a timber frame, with some sections clad in weatherboarding. They feature low-pitched metal roofs on plywood box beam purlins. The terraces are set at right angles to the street, creating visual interest with side doors and connecting fences.

No. 2 has green timber windows and green weatherboarded eaves, linked to No. 4 by a fence. Nos. 4-10 feature green and red weatherboarding, with green weatherboarding to the rear, and have projecting brick porches with blue roofs and a prominent red door at No. 4. Nos. 12-18 have green and red weatherboarded eaves, green weatherboarding to the rear, and green door hoods. Green bird boxes are positioned at either end. No. 20 has green weatherboarding to the front and rear, with a round bastion garden feature wall to the rear, enclosed by a green fence, linked to Nos. 12-18 by a fence.

Nos. 22-26 and 26a, the Byker Photographic Workshop, displays green weatherboarding with a red vertical band between units. A single-storey workshop has red doors and blue roofs to brick porches on Nos. 24 and 26. Nos. 28-34 have green and brown weatherboarding with red vertical bands. Number 26 has a sloping roof over the end garage, and No. 34 has a green bird box. A pergola links Nos. 34 and 36, with green weatherboarded flank walls.

Nos. 36-44 form an ‘L’ shaped terrace, with black bird boxes to Nos. 40 and 42. Nos. 36-40 utilize green weatherboarded eaves with red vertical stripes, while Nos. 42 and 44 have blue first-floor weatherboarding. The houses have red and blue doors with horizontal panels under blue hoods.

Windows are timber framed with timber surrounds and aluminium opening lights. Timber doors are of particular interest where noted; otherwise, some have been replaced with hardwood. The interiors were not inspected. The group is notable for its decorative detailing, including linking walls and fences, and for the bird boxes on many end walls, which add accents to the streetscape.
