Description
Mount Pleasant House is a sheltered housing development built between 1978 and 1980 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as the site architect and structural engineering by White, Young and Partners. The main contractor was Fairclough Building Limited. The building features pale metric modular brick cladding over concrete block work with cross-wall construction, some exposed steelwork, and pre-cast cantilevers for the balconies, all topped with a flat roof. It stands two storeys high, with an entrance on the east side that includes a full-height glazed triangular window providing light to the main stairway. The entrance showcases exposed brown steel sections, while the eaves are finished in brown weatherboarding and the balconies project in a red-brown hue. The windows are made of timber within timber subframes, equipped with aluminium opening lights, and there is a timber door. The interiors were not inspected. This building is recognized as a strong example of the high standards of provision for the elderly and disabled within the Byker redevelopment.
