Description

St Andrew's Roman Catholic Church and attached presbytery are located in Newcastle upon Tyne. The presbytery was built in 1865 and the church around 1880, both to designs by Edward Welby Pugin. The buildings are constructed of stone with ashlar dressings and slate roofs.

The presbytery has a rock-faced stone plinth and a chamfered ashlar band. It features a hipped roof with two moulded ashlar ridge stacks and bracketed eaves. The street front has three windows, with a tall staircase window centrally, in a pointed arched surround with a hood mould and Y-tracery. Single triple plain sash windows flank the staircase window, each with a moulded segment arched head. Above a moulded band are single windows similar to those below. A passage doorway is situated to the left, with a chamfered pointed arched surround. The right return displays similar single and two-light windows. The rear entrance facade has a doorway to the left, reached by six steps, and features a plank door with ornate iron hinges and overlight. To the right are two two-light cross casement windows with leaded lattice glazing and stained glass panels. Above are three similar two-light cross casements.

The interior of the presbytery retains its original wooden staircase, featuring two turned balusters per tread and a moulded handrail, original marble fireplaces on the ground floor, original doors, shutters, plaster coving and skirting boards.

The church has rock-faced stone work with ashlar dressings, a moulded eaves band, ashlar coped gables with kneelers, a continuous moulded cill band, and a chamfered plinth. The church includes a nave with a north aisle and an octagonal ended chancel. The west front features a glazed iron canopy over the entrance. A central pointed arched doorway is set within a deeply moulded surround with a hood mould. Above the doorway is a large rose window with six outer quatrefoils, and in the gable apex are three graduated lancets. The south street front has six tall three-light pointed arched windows, each with different tracery, and is punctuated by single tall buttresses. The octagonal ended chancel has single two-light pointed arch windows with different tracery to each face, and tall buttresses between. A small gabled vestry to the north has a single pointed arched window with three graduated lancets.

The church interior presents a five-bay north nave arcade with octagonal piers and double chamfered arches. There is an elaborate wooden roof. The west gallery supports an organ and includes an inserted glazed screen. Other interior features include contemporary wooden pews and an octagonal pulpit.

The two buildings form an integral unit; however, the presbytery, designed by the significant Victorian architect Edward Welby Pugin, is of higher architectural quality than the later parish church, although the church is also impressive.
