Description

Nos. 11-25 (odd), with a stone retaining wall to the front and fences to the rear, are two short terraces of eight houses built in 1976-78 by Ralph Erskine's Arkitektkontor, with Vernon Gracie as site architect. The structural engineer was White, Young and Partners, and Shepherd Construction Limited was the main contractor. The houses are constructed of pale modular metric brick on a timber frame, with weatherboarding. They feature blue metal monopitch roofs with plywood box beam purlins. The houses are two storeys high, with Nos. 11-17 rising in steps, so that No. 17 appears higher, and Nos. 19-25 stepped back. A pergola and bird box connect Nos. 17 and 19. The front of the houses is set lower than the road, with yellow metal door hoods and blue doors. The weatherboarding is green, except for Nos. 17 and 19, which have brown weatherboarding; No. 15 has only half weatherboarding. The garden elevation has bright green eaves, except for No. 17, which has brown, along with renewed windows in hardwood. All other windows are timber, with timber sub-frames and aluminium opening lights, many of which are sliding. Prominent brown timber fences are located between the units, with a triangular top section. The interiors have not been inspected. The terraces form a prominent group on the main route through the Chirton area, leading to and from Headlam Green. The history and sources for these houses are documented with Nos. 1-75 Dunn Terrace.
