Description
Nos. 34 to 40 Grey Street are shops and houses, now used as offices, built around 1836 by the architect John Dobson for Richard Grainger. The building is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with a granite ground floor added around 1930, and features a Welsh slate roof. It stands four storeys high and has five bays. The upper floors are adorned with Giant Corinthian pilasters flanking the end bays, while the central three bays are recessed. The end bays have paired sash windows in plain reveals, with the first-floor windows featuring dentilled and bracketed cornices. The recessed central section has sash windows in plain reveals, with a deep cornice on paired brackets and a balustrade linking the end bays. A prominent entablature on the second floor includes a dentilled cornice, and the top windows, which are in architraves, are set under a cornice and balustrade. The building also has an inserted mansard roof.
